SS Maestro
Hard Red Spring Milling Wheat
SS Maestro is a hard red spring milling wheat developed by Minas Seed Co-operative. It has been shown to be well adapted in both Quebec and in the Maritimes.
Maturity
SS Maestro is relatively late maturing. It is approximately 8 days later than Consens and four days later than Belvedere and AC Voyageur. SS Maestro can compliment winter wheats, barley, and early-maturing spring wheat by spreading out harvest.
Yield
SS Maestro is the highest yielding spring milling wheat recommended in Publication 100B with a yield index of 109. * In 1996 Ag Canada trials at Bouctouche, SS Maestro was the second highest yielding spring wheat, behind Consens, and the highest yielding spring milling wheat - averaging 1.58 t/ac. * In the NSDAM 1995 Spring Wheat Demonstration in Kings County, SS Maestro out-yielded all other spring wheats at 1.68 t/ac.
Lodging & Disease Resistance
SS Maestro is a tall variety, averaging 103cm in height, yet it has excellent straw strength - equal to or better than all other spring wheats. This unique combination allows a superior straw yield while maintaining straw strength for efficient combining. SS Maestro is resistant to powdery mildew.
Grain Quality
SS Maestro is characterized by Dover Mills as a strong blend milling wheat. It has very good gluten strength and loaf volume, this despite the fact that SS Maestro does not achieve protein levels as high as some other spring milling wheats. To attract the premiums offered by the spring milling wheat market, SS Maestro must be marketed through Grain and Forage Nova Scotia (GFNS) under their identity preserved program. This simply means planting Certified Seed, having the fields visited by an IP inspector, and delivery to a GFNS designated grain centre or elevator. This system ensures varietal purity to the milling and baking industries which can then effectively use SS Maestro as a strong blender.
Quality Seed
All Lyndhurst Farms seed lots of SS Maestro Spring Wheat are grown, handled and processed with care to ensure vigorous high performing seed. All lots are tested for germination and seed weight with the results available to the grower. Lyndhurst Farms seed lots of Maestro are treated with VitafloR 280, as a seed treatment is essential to a good start in min-till and no-till situations.
Growing
1. Plant into a firm seedbed - Do not seed over one inch deep.
2. Use treated, Certified Seed.
3. Seed 400 viable kernels per m2 (approx. 160 lb/ac) for top yield potential.
4. Seed early for top yield potential.
5. Ensure that K2O is in adequate supply, especially in potato rotations.
(1.50 t/ac of spring wheat will require 80 lb/ac K2O). 6. Apply preplant - 55 lb/ac N, all the required K2O, and P2O5 if necessary. Apply at Zadoks 31-32 - 85 lb/ac N as urea or split into 55 lb/ac N at Zadoks 31-32 followed by 30 lb/ac N at Zadoks 40. 7. Apply 0.2 L/ac (0.5 L/ha) Tilt at head emergence only if Septoria pressure is heavy.
